Edye Evans Hyde, “Magic In His Eyes” – Alternate title: “Magic in Her Voice.” The gregarious Edye Evans Hyde has long impressed West Michigan audiences with her jazz, soul and pop stylings, but her latest album solidifies her reputation as one of the region’s vocal treasures. Her renditions of classics by Cole Porter, Burt Bacharach, Chaka Khan, Miles Davis and others, along with a simmering version of the Gershwins’ “Summertime,” were recorded at River City Studios in Grand Rapids. The 10 jazzy tracks are further bolstered by the instrumental prowess of her guitarist-husband Michael Hyde, drummer-son, Evan, pianist Terry Lower, bassists Sam Weber and Charlie Hoats, saxophonist John Gist, trumpet player Rob Smith, percussionist Rob Mulligan, violinists Eric Tanner and Chris Martin, celloist Steve VanRavenswaay and viola player Leslie VanBecker.
The variety is great and the musicians are especially fabulous.
Edye's voice is so smooth and easy to listen to. My favorite tracks are
What Is This Thing Called Love and Willow Weep For Me.
I definitely plan on recommending this CD to my jazz loving friends!
The title track Magic In His Eyes was a pleasant surprise and the musicians were great on every selection. I plan to purchase many copies for birthday gifts in the next two months. I am an Edye Evans Hyde fan for life.
Very excited and humbled to be sharing this evening with some wonderful recepients past and present.
